Stop the Red Tide

Around Australia at any one time, communities are struggling to deal with issues related to outfall discharges in their area. These polluting discharges also include nutrients, notorious for causing algal blooms – sometimes called red tides – that are hazardous for marine life and recreational users.
Whether it be related water treatment infrastructure that is poorly funded, under capacity or out of date or issues caused by increasing populations, new polluting industries - the complex nature of waste water discharges make it hard for communities to understand.
This means that decisions can be biased toward the water sector keen to avoid “go into the red” from an accounting view - rather than what’s right for oceans. This can leave communities feeling disempowered and disconnected from critical water infrastructure decisions that will pollute their coastal environment.
Working with our advisory network of pro bono experts COF supports locals acting for a better deal for the environment even if all else fails and legal action is required.
Currently COF is supporting local champions in Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Sunshine Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and Beenyup near Perth.
