PROTECT OUR SURF COAST
(Clean Ocean Clean Water)

Help stop bad decisions on water supply that will pollute our oceans and coastlines.

STOP OCEAN POLLUTION
Every day we all pollute our ocean
Around the coast of Victoria, we dump one MCG full of water contaminated with pollutants into our ocean every day. Each year Australia wide, there is enough polluted wastewater dumped into Australia’s oceans to fill Sydney Harbour more than two and half times. This cocktail of toxic waste contains carcinogens, pharmaceuticals, hormone disruptors, algae producing chemicals, microfibre plastics and other hazardous pollutants.

NO MORE DE$ALINATION
Meanwhile, the impact of climate change and growing populations on water supply have the same players up to their old tricks, calling for construction of more ocean polluting, expensive, energy guzzling, desalination plants close to Victoria’s Eastern and Western Surfing reserves.

Some want to see nuclear power plants built next to theses energy guzzlers to run them!

More desalination plants mean more ocean pollution.

But there is a way we can secure our water future and reduce the ocean pollution.

RECYCLE WATER
Understanding the modern water cycle
Established in 2000, environmental charity Clean Ocean Foundation has been working hard to understand the complex nature of the modern water cycle and how this impacts on the waste water we dump out of ocean outfalls around Australia’s rivers and oceans.

Our research and that of independent water experts, show that with advances in water technology over the last decade, we can reduce ocean pollution from outfalls and secure our water supply. Australia can have its cake – and eat it too.

Water Recycling Nodes
It’s only wastewater if you waste it!
Simply put, we can modernise all our waste water treatment plants, that currently pollute our oceans and rivers, into clean water recycling nodes. These will safely and economically produce purified recycled water for our use.

For every litre of water produced by any new desalination plant in Australia, when options for recycling are ignored, two litres of needless pollution will be created

This purified recycled water, at a fraction of the cost of desalinated water, can provide water security we need. It also stops us needing to dump waste from both our wastewater treatment plants and any new desalination plants into our ocean and rivers too – forever!

Complex decisions need an effective and real democratic process
We will need to convince our politicians and other decision makers that it’s time Australia had an adult conversation about water supply options involving a trusted democratic process.

We must challenge the misconception that the only solution to water shortages is to build more environmentally damaging and expensive desalination plants on Australia’s precious coastlines.

Let’s show all Australia there’s a better way
Join our Clean Ocean Clean Water campaign to achieve a safe and clean future for Australia’s water supply and ocean.
