National Outfall Reporting Standards

In the lead up to the 2019 Federal Election, Clean Ocean Foundation asked and received bipartisan support for the consideration of:
  1. A national approach to coastal outfall upgrades
  2. A national standard for reporting of coastal outfalls
  3. Continuing support for the National Outfall Database to continue collecting data
As a result of this overwhelming support, Clean Ocean Foundation is continuing its work with Marine Biodiversity HUB to develop a draft national standard on outfalls.

With major concerns over national water security Clean Ocean Foundation is strongly advocating for coastal outfall upgrades (to Class A+) as a minimum to drive initiatives in water recycling.

Clean Ocean Foundation believes that National Standards for Outfall Reporting will improve transparency and informed community involvement.

This is critical in
  • Evaluating the effects of outfall pollution
  •  Ensuring any future wastewater recycling also benefits the marine environment in line with community expectations.

We are currently preparing a preliminary draft for discussion and stakeholder comment.
