What you can do now.
- Buy less, synthetic (often labelled poly/cotton) garments.
- Buy more natural fibres that will break down in the environment.
- Avoid poor quality synthetic garments.
- Consider using a liquid soap (less harsh on clothes).
- Do a full load of washing (less friction in a full wash).
- Use a colder wash setting (high temperatures damage clothes).
- Wash synthetic and fleece garments less often.
- When a synthetic garment appears ages, it sheds more fibres. Get rid of it responsibly.
- Dry spin at lower revs and heat (reduces damage to clothes).
- Install a laundry filter (good quality ones will remove up to 90% of microfibres) or use a wash bag.
- Ask our politicians to act faster and do more to introduce safe filters for all washing machines.
