RESEARCH INTO IMPACT ON RECREATIONAL USERS OF THE COASTAL ENVIRONMENT NEAR OUTFALLS
WATER POLLUTION
There are many contributors to water pollution. Direct sources include effluent outfalls from factories, refineries, waste treatment plants etc.. that emit fluids of varying quality directly into urban water supplies. Indirect sources include contaminants that enter the water supply from soils/groundwater systems and from the atmosphere via rain water.
Soils and groundwaters contain the residue of human agricultural practices (fertilizers, pesticides, etc..) and improperly disposed of industrial wastes. Atmospheric contaminants are also derived from human practices (such as gaseous emissions from automobiles, factories and even bakeries).

WHAT IS THE NATIONAL OUTFALL DATABASE?
First Let'sDiscover
This project will develop a National Outfall Database thet integrates information about pollutants arising from sewerage treatment and their distribution from sewerage outfalls around Australia
|
Now let's WORKConserve
Information on Australia's (estimated) 144 sewerage outfalls requires validation and consolidation to provide a clear understanding of their impacts for governments & coastal communities
|
IT'S UP TO USChange
The National Outfall Database will collect this information and provide a single access point. The project will link decision makers, water authorities as well as bringing together local coastal communities

REGISTER YOUR INTEREST IN COMMUNITY MONITORING
Clean Ocean Foundation plans to conduct pilot trials of community monitoring related to sewerage outfalls later this year. The plan is to then implement the monitoring program over Australia's coast during 2017 - 2018. If you, or a group you belong to might wish to engage with us on monitoring these outfalls and want to know more, please fill in your details below and we will be in touch.
