HIAB

Human Impact on Australian Beaches

Clean Ocean is working with the Surfrider Foundation to conduct surveys for the Human Impact on Australian Beaches (HIAB) project. Clean Ocean is responsible for finding and managing volunteers to survey beaches between Port Philip Bay and the NSW border.

HIAB is a core research and education project of the Surfrider Foundation (SF). SF is an international not-for-profit conservation organisation dedicated to the protection and enhancement of coastal and marine environments throughout the world.

HIAB was created in 1993 by SF Australia founding member, Mr Michael Legge Wilkinson, to raise awareness of the impacts and issues affecting Australian beaches and what can be done to mitigate these impacts.

To date, the project has released two major reports in 1993 and 1996. Both reports attracted national and international publicity and were widely distributed to all sectors of the community including government agencies, research and educational institutions, community groups and the general public.

The Peninsula Arc project, represented by Simon Napthine, has announced it will survey the Westernport beaches between HMAS Cerebus and Flinders. Community activist, Gidja Walker is in the process of approaching other community groups on the Peninsula for their input. It is our goal to complete the survey of Mornington Peninsula Beaches by October this year.
