I have always liked that people who surf are really, really into it... All surfers seem to have taken an oath that they will sustain a lifelong quest to find ‘the perfect wave ’. It is of course, an eternally elusive quest and inevitably I am sure surfers reconcile themselves to the fact that the perfect wave is always the one that they are on. It’s funny because that’s just like the way an artists mind works or at least mine does anyway.

I always imagine the perfect artwork is just around the next corner. But there is no future artwork only today ’s painting or today ’s sculpture. And what of today ’s painting? A very sexy, one-hundred-headed pink snake twists up the surf board. This feminine hot-pink mama arises like smoke from a precious little green egg being held out in the fingers of a monk ’s hand.

No doubt tomorrows painting will tell another story, sweet on it ’s own yet building upon this one… Born in 1975, Sydney artist Nell is making a name for herself as one of Australia ’s most vibrant contemporary artists. Since 1994 she has shown in contemporary art spaces and leading private galleries and has been the recipient of several study grants including The 1994 William Fletcher Trust Grant, 1996 Pat Corrigan Grant and the 2003 Australia Council Rome Studio. Founding director of Rubyayre artists-run gallery, she has also been included in several major curated exhibitions such as 2004 Australian Culture Now at the NGV.
